The Basics

Your Digestive System

Your digestive system (or "GI tract") is a group of organs that helps your body use food and drink. It turns food into fuel and removes waste as stool.

  • Food Pipe (Esophagus): The tube carrying food to your stomach.
  • Stomach: Uses acid to break food down.
  • Intestines: Where your body takes in nutrients.
  • Liver & Pancreas: Help make juices that digest food.

Black Tarry Stools emergency

Belly (Abdominal) Pain

Most pain comes from gas or mild infection. See us if pain lasts for days, wakes you up at night, or causes weight loss.

Heartburn & Acid Reflux

A burning feeling in your chest. See us if it happens >2 times a week or if food feels stuck in your throat.

Bowel Changes

See a doctor if you have diarrhea or constipation for more than 2-3 weeks, or if you see any blood.

Understanding Indigestion

Decoding Dyspepsia

Indigestion (Dyspepsia) isn't just one thing. It's a set of symptoms like feeling full too quickly, upper belly pain, or a burning sensation.

The "75% Rule"

Did you know? For 3 out of 4 people, the stomach looks normal on tests, but doesn't *work* right. This is called Functional Indigestion.

Even if tests are normal, the pain is real. We focus on calming your stomach's sensitivity.

Red Flags: Act Now

See a doctor immediately for an Endoscopy if you notice any of these:

  • Weight Loss: Losing >5% of your weight without trying.
  • Difficulty Swallowing: Food feeling "stuck."
  • Constant Vomiting: Or seeing blood in vomit/stools.
  • Iron Deficiency: Low blood count (Anemia) you can't explain.

The Diagnostic Roadmap

Our step-by-step approach to finding the root cause of your indigestion.

📅
Age Assessment

Age 60+ We start with an Endoscopy (camera test) to safely rule out serious issues early.

🦠
Germ Check

Under 60 We usually start with a non-invasive breath or stool test to check for H. pylori bacteria.

🔍
Persistent Symptoms

3-6 Months If discomfort continues despite treatment, we look deeper with advanced scans or biopsies.

Stomach Health & H. pylori

H. pylori is a common germ that affects the stomach. While often silent, it can cause pain, ulcers, or even more serious long-term issues if left untreated.

The Tests
  • Simple Breath Test
  • Simple Stool Test
  • (Blood tests are less reliable)
Warning Signs
  • Persistent vomiting
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Black or tarry stools
Treatment Roadmap

Treatment usually involves a 2-week course of 2-4 medicines. It's vital to finish the full course, even if you feel better earlier. We re-test you 4 weeks later to ensure the germ is 100% gone.

Pro Tip: If a family member had stomach cancer, you should be tested for this germ.
Fatty Liver & Alcohol Care

Liver Health & Recovery

Your liver is your body's filter. Excessive alcohol or fat can damage it, leading to swelling or scarring (Cirrhosis).

Healing Steps
  • 150 mins brisk walking/week
  • 10-min "exercise snacks"
  • More fruits & vegetables
Strict No-Gos
  • Alcohol (No safe limit)
  • Tobacco / Smoking
  • High Fructose & Sugar
Why Quit Alcohol?

Stopping entirely is the only way to prevent severe liver damage and the risk of transplant.

Belly Fluid (Paracentesis)

A safe procedure to remove excess fluid from the abdomen to help you breathe easier.

Monitoring

Contact us for fever, pain, or confusion (Brain Fog), as these can be signs of infection.

Gallstones & Duct Health

Expert removal of stones and management of bile duct blockages.

  • Gallstones: Diagnosis and diet support.
  • ERCP: Clearing the path in the common bile duct.
Prevention & Care

Daily exercise and healthy fats protect your gallbladder. If stones are removed, we guide you on life after surgery.

IBD & Celiac Care

Digestive Harmony

Specialized care for Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) and Celiac disease (Gluten sensitivity).

Understanding Celiac

Gluten (found in wheat, barley, rye) damages the small intestine. Symptoms range from diarrhea to anemia.

  • The Test: Simple blood test followed by a biopsy for confirmation.
  • Treatment: A strict, lifelong gluten-free diet is the only way to heal.
IBD & Biological Therapy

Managing Crohn's and Ulcerative Colitis through modern treatments focused on lasting remission and quality of life.

Warning Signs: If a gluten-free diet doesn't improve your symptoms, see your doctor immediately for further tests.

Advanced Clinical Care

GI Cancer Center

Early screening and evidence-based care for GI tumors.

Endocrine Tumors

Care for rare growths that affect your body's hormones.

Diagnostic Tests

Upper Endoscopy (EGD)

An Upper Endoscopy is a safe test that lets your doctor see inside your food pipe, stomach, and the start of your intestine using a small camera.

How to Prepare
  • Fasting: No food for 6 to 8 hours. You can drink clear water until 2 hours before.
  • Medicines: Take your usual pills with a small sip of water, unless they are for diabetes or blood thinning. Ask us first!
  • Support: You will be sleepy after, so have a friend or family member ready to take you home.
Why is it done?

To find the cause of pain, weight loss, or trouble swallowing. Sometimes, we can also fix small problems during the test.

Safety First

This is a very safe test. Before we start, our team will check your heart and blood to make sure you can handle the sleep medicine safely.

Common Risks

Serious problems are very rare. The most common minor issues are a sore throat or feeling bloated for an hour.

Advanced Diagnostic Procedures

🔭
Colonoscopy

The gold standard for colon health. A camera examination of the large bowel to detect polyps or inflammation.
